Kid Friendly Halloween Recipes

Today is October 20th, and I just can’t believe how fast this year has gone! Each season has it’s own unique wonders, but I just love fall! I love the first part with the balmy weather that is almost like spring, then the crispness that is starting to creep in…. And speaking of creeping, less than thirty days to Halloween!!!! Which means your little goblins need some treats! Candy is traditional, but if you change out some of the treats for things you make (or let them make)…you control some of the ingredients. So you limit the bad stuff that most commercial products have. Here are some kid friendly Halloween recipes that the kids can help make!

Popcorn Balls. No need to use corn syrup!

All you really need to do, is pop up your popcorn….first. Organic ingredients, are best, and organic popcorn is pretty easy to find, and not really expensive. I like to pop my own with a mixture of coconut oil and butter (real butter, not the fake stuff). After you have popped and lightly salted your corn, set that aside and lay out some sheets of waxed paper if you have it, some clean dry plates or pans if you don’t.

Now, melt some butter in a heavy bottomed pot, and add some marshmallows, when they are almost melted, add a dash of vanilla and stir thoroughly. Then, drop your popcorn in and stir it around. If you have a big pot of popcorn, a stick of butter and a bag of large marshmallows should do the trick!

Next, with clean goblin hands, you or the kiddos can form balls and put them on the waxed paper to dry. Done. Unless you want to decorate, of course! Chocolate drizzles can be made to look like spiders, for example, or natural food colorings can be used to simply make colored balls!

I saw some really disgusting ones…which means kids will love them, that looked like bloody brains last year! You can also put on some little candy eyes and make the balls more like blobs–presto, instant monsters!

Note, if you don’t want to use marshmallows, you can use warm honey, with or without butter. And air popped corn. But you may find it is a little more work to stir. With Raw unfiltered honey, it is definitely a healthier option!

Another easy recipe is Mummy Fingers.

Take hot dogs and wrap loosely with strips of crescent roll, biscuit, or pizza dough so it looks like the mummy’s wrappings are coming loose, and some of the ‘finger’ is showing through. Put on a cookie sheet and bake until done. These are a quick snack or part of an easy Halloween dinner before Trick or Treat!

Caramel Apples With Worms

Unwrap a couple of bags of caramels (I like Krafts) and melt them. Get your favorite kind of Apples, wash, dry, and stab thru the stem end with a popsicle stick. Push it about half way in so that it is solid with the apple, but still room to grip. Dip them in the melted caramel, swirl quickly over the pot to get the excess off, and put to dry on waxed paper. Take a gummy worm and stick lightly on top of the apple, or cut in half and press in as if it were crawling out of the apple. Totally gross.

One of my favorite places to get Organic ingredients, is Thrive Market. Whether you look for Organic, Vegan, NON GMO, or Paleo friendly, this is a great place to start!
