Churros- History And Recipes

churros

Oh, my gosh, I think I need to move to UTAH!! Now, that is something I never thought I would say, but…Churros. And not just churros, but award winning, filled and crispy fried with freshly ground cinnamon sugar….I could be there in about three days hard driving!! I have gone on road trips with less reason! (Once, I drove to Texas to stay eight hours and ended up staying 5 years)…yeah…they are THAT good!!! Their slogan is “Heaven sent, Wicked good!” and everyone that has tried them has agreed.

Artisan Filled Churros–I actually never knew people filled them, till now…but sure does sound delicious…lemon curd, or chocolate, raspberry….yum!!

This company has a physical location in Utah, but they also cater events all over, and, even better (because my husband just nixed moving to Utah), they ship!!!! Even to Alaska and Hawaii! You can get take and bake, or fresh frozen dough, DIY kits, or even churro makers and bottles of the yummy fillings!!! You can even insure your order for .98 cents in case of any churro delivery catastrophe! However, they package everything really well, so probably the only thing you need to worry about is your neighbor swiping them….

If you Google it, you might see that churros have been searched a lot lately. Maybe it is because last year we all missed our usual festivals and fairs. Meaning we missed our lovely fried treats, lol. But it made me curious to see where the heck these came from. And now I know, but still not quite sure how they ended up in UTAH!!

So, where did they come from? The short answer is…enterprising campers with a sweet tooth! Ok, actually, there are a few legends. One says they were brought back from China, where they ate them savory, but they got adapted to a kind of sweet donut stick with the addition of sugar and cinnamon. Another says that shepards in Spain invented them as a sweet breakfast that they fried on the campfire. At some point they were introduced to chocolate sauce for dunking, or maybe it was hot chocolate at first, then sauce, but either way is delicious!!

Apparently, the filling is traditionally dulce de leche, but you can go for Hazelnut chocolate spread like Nutella, or the company does seasonal flavors like pumpkin cheesecake, caramel apple and chocolate ganache.

The dry churro mix makes 13 gourmet mini churros, and you just add water, mix and fry. And I just saw a notice that they are coming out with a vegan churro mix and also a gluten-free mix soon, so everybody can get churros!! The Churro maker DIY kit already has a Vegan option, I noticed.

Actually cooking them is quick and easy, about ten minutes, including the mixing time! Now, the bad thing is, I recently went Keto, so I am playing around with an almond flour version of make my own right now, because I can’t wait for them to get here, lol. I hope their new gluten free packets are going to be keto friendly!! If you are interested, let me know and I will get you my recipe, but meanwhile, I made my first almond flour fried chicken and biscuits, which turned out pretty good! I did the drop biscuits for my husband for Father’s Day, and you can get the recipe right here. Was pleasant to have bread at breakfast today!!

Meanwhile, back to churros, Food Network has some good recipes, too!
